Oviedo - First Post

I've studied abroad before, so Oviedo won't be a complete unknown. The last time, though, I was in England, so I spoke the language, and I stayed in a dorm with other college students. I probably speak enough Spanish to get around, but not enough to have an in-depth conversation. That'll take some getting used to, although I hope that by the time I get home, my Spanish has improved significantly (hopefully with the added benefit of good grades). The host family will be something to get used to as well. I generally get along with people fairly well but I don't usually have to move in with someone I don't know and who speaks a different language than I do. I'm optimistic but I'd be lying if I said I weren't a little nervous.

I don't think learning the language will be difficult--at least, no more than it would be here. I visited Madrid for a few days with a friend a couple years ago, and I remembered more of my high school Spanish in those few days than I did in my entire Spanish 1010 class. Once you're forced to speak the language in order to get around or do anything, you pick it up pretty quickly.

I am excited to live in a different country, see how other people approach daily life, eat Spanish food (I've never had paella and I'm really looking forward to trying it), and travel. I'm doing some travel with Dylan, Mallory, and Kelsey beforehand--I leave on Monday the 10th--and afterward we're going to (hopefully) Istanbul, Madrid, Barcelona, southern Spain, and finally Pamplona for the San Fermin festival and the running of the bulls.

All in all, it should be a good time and I can't wait.
